Art Event 3

Posted in Uncategorized on April 29, 2009 by actnsweet

The third art event that I went to view was the gallery in Arts building put up by the Installation class. I really liked this group of work because it was all very different. There was a lot to look at as well as to think about. It took me a little while to realize that not all the pieces had a common theme, but were all different and special in there own way. I loved how all the pieces took up it own space and for once there was nothing hung on the walls. It seems that every time a new exhibition is in the gallery its mostly about hanging stuff.  However what I did not like about it was the arrangement of art works in the space it self. It really did not flow to me and I especially disliked the empty case squeezed into the side nook. My favorite piece would have to be the one where the person took out the insides of a television and made it into a bird cage. She then made that fit into an installation scenario of an out home living room for entertainment. I thought it was very interesting how she made the viewer come into the project and be a part of it.

The website above is one that I found on my own by googling “artist books”. Her name is Judith Hoffman and I love her style. I found her blog first and couldn’t stop reading all she had to say and show.  She makes her books out jewelry making and metal materials becuase that was her passion before she discovered the artists books. All of her books are very fasinating and worth looking at. I love the ones where she made found objects look like miny book sculptures. I really like them because she not only makes them sculptured, but she leaves them in book form. Judith uses many different mediums for her books. Some of them are made out of all metal, some of them are made out of metal and paper pages, she has really pushed boudaries when making these master pieces!

Book Artist 1

The first book artist that I choose to write about is Rachelle Chuang. I found her books on the San Diego Book Artist web page. I found her work to be very interesting because she completely transformed her books into sculptures. She takes the essence of the words out of the actual book and makes it as something to be read itself . Pages to be viewed as beautiful works of art and not just words on paper, but actual pages and bindings. I think I related to this artist because I too like to take the words out of stuff. I like for the viewer to simply look, see and come up with their own emotion and feeling about the work.

Art Event 2

The next art event I went to was actually very different. It might not have even been considered an “event,” but more as a way of life. Over Valentine’s day weekend my fiance and I took a trip up to Mammoth. On the way up there, there was this very interesting place in a very tiny town that a man had built up, it was what looked liked a store, but in the backyard it looked much like an artist dream house.  This man took everything he could find, things that most people would consider junk or trash, and made them into amazing sculptures. Some of these sculptures had an everyday use, like a chair or lamp and some of these things were made for simple pleasure. He used glass bottles, rope, light bulbs, huge pieces of metal and just crazy things that could take years to list. I really enjoyed this because it kind of reminded me of the 1000 journals project. He just felt like sending out journals to see what would come up and this guy here just felt like making a house/store out of what he could find to see what it could turn into. The artist was not there when we stopped to see it, so I couldn’t get all of the information, but here are a few pictures. I was affraid that somebody would stop me, so I tryed to take them very fast and sneakingly, in other words, please don’t mind the quality of the photos. Also it’s kind of hard to see the the beauty of these objects in the photos, but just trust me, it was a sight to see!!

Art event 1

The first art event I went to was the Escondido Center for the Arts Museum. This museum had several galleries including the “20th Century Photography: Selections from the Wacovia SecuritiesArtCollection.” I found this gallery to be very interesting, not only because I am a photography major, but because it had many different subjects and themes. Most of the photographs were black and white which made them very more interestingto view because it’s not such popular thing anymore. I also loved how they weren’t bigger then 16×20 photos. Along with the variety of content, it made the gallery feel very intimate and personal.

Another gallery that was at this museum was the “Divi/Nation” installations by Debby and Larry Kline. These installations were very fascinating to me.  They took different child hood games, stories, actions and put them into situations that created tension. Most of there subjects had to do with the Iraq war that is still going on today and fight against global warming.

Overall, I enjoyed this museum and would return again if there was an exhibit that interested me such as the “20th Century Photography.”

Update on my book of transformations…

Posted in Uncategorized on March 17, 2009 by actnsweet

So my book of transformations is going to be literally about me transforming this semester. Over this 3 and half month period I have and will be transforming myself into many new things. I am going to be documenting with pictures my ups and downs of the semester with topics including me going through my last semester of college as an art student, planning my wedding, becoming and sustaining to be an amazing family member, being there for my old and new friends,  looking to become an entrepreneur in the selling business, as well as becoming the best photographer as I can possibly be.  I am thinking about titling it: Lights, Camera, Action.

Here are a few pages I have worked on….

I enjoy his work because he is one of the original photo collage artists. He didn’t have the technology of digital computers or photoshop to put together his pieces. I loved how he just used what he had and didn’t really have a budget to bring in anything fancy.

1000 Journals

Posted in Uncategorized on February 18, 2009 by actnsweet

I thought this is the coolest project. Just the fact that he put out a 1000 of them so that the project would have a chance of surviving is awesome in itself, but the fact that people are/were actually expressing themselves in them is amazing. This gives a whole new look at journaling. It’s not just writing your thoughts down on paper, but it is to create an expression out of whatever you can possibly find or think of. I think watching this film and looking at the web site has given me more then enough inspiration so that I can make my journal more creative.

Zines

Posted in Uncategorized on February 18, 2009 by actnsweet

2 weeks ago I visited the Zines Gallery at Mira Costa College. I thought the gallery was very interesting and was nicely displayed. I even thought the openness of the topics was interesting as well. My favorite part of visiting this gallery was the fact that they had a workshop in the middle of the room where you could make your own zine or page to be put into a zine. I participated in this by using the copy machine, cut outs of interesting small images and a type writer all for the use of who ever wanted to do this project. I turned my in anonymously and hope somebody can use it in one of their zines.
